PLAN DE DÉVELOPPEMENT DE LA PÊCHE AU SAUMON ET DE LA PÊCHE SPORTIVE AU QUÉBEC 2017-2022 | PDPS 

Funding is provided by the ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs (MFFP) as part of the Plan de développement de la pêche au saumon et de la pêche sportive au Québec 2017-2022, an investment made by the Quebec government.

Issues regarding salmon fishery development are divided into several components:

  1. Infrastructure
  2. Consolidation of the salmon return monitoring network (count)
  3. Environmental Assistance Fund
  4. Indigenous statements
  5. Regional, national and international advocacy
  6. Promotion through local organizations
  7. Awareness
  8. Education

Infrastructure

The majority of all investments are made under this component. Infrastructure projects are primarily dedicated to the refurbishment of information offices and accommodation buildings. Part of this budget is also dedicated to creating new fishing sectors.

Consolidation of the salmon return monitoring network (count)

Allows for projects such as the installation of river counting fences, the maintenance of fishways, and the purchase of necessary equipment for the salmon’s return to the rivers.

Environmental Assistance Fund

Such funding allows organizations to be subsidized each year to help cover for a portion of the hours used to pay for wildlife protection assistants working on salmon rivers.

Indigenous statements

This aspect was introduced to ensure proper salmon fishery management between the government and Native communities.

Regional, national and international advocacy

This has led to the creation of the Saumon Québec website and the rebranding of the Federation’s (FQSA) trademark, Saumon Québec.

Promotion through local organizations

It provides river managers with funding for advertisement purposes. This aspect also allows river managers to be repaid for their duties as representatives at various conventions.

Mobilization

Raising awareness among salmon river users and the next generation about conservation issues and values in order to preserve the salmon resource.

Education

Allows for the creation of projects, such as the implementation of a training platform for employees, the making of a practical guide on the management of a salmon river, as well as various customized trainings that will be given to managers according to their needs and circumstances.
