Salmon fishing on the Piashti River

The Piashti is a small but productive river. Issuing from two upland lakes, Piashti and Petit Piashti, the river winds its way through 58 kilometers (36 miles) of mountainous countryside to the lovely village of Baie-Johan-Beetz, 66 kilometers (41 miles) east of Havre Saint-Pierre. This is where this gem of a river joins the Gulf of St. Lawrence on its way to the Atlantic and is the point of entry of the salmon on their upstream journey.
The river is accessible for only 6 kilometers (3.75 miles) and is operated by a single outfitter. The Piashti features 8 pools, which can fished by wading or in a boat. The water is cold and crystal clear but affords few opportunities for sight fishing because of its dark bottom made of gravel and large stones. The salmon catches weigh on average between 2.5 and 4 kilos (5.5 and 8.8 pounds). This is a river that deserves to be fished.
