WHEN CAN I GO FISHING?

Generally speaking, the Atlantic salmon fishing season lasts from May 15th to September 30th* every year in Quebec.

The sea-run brook trout fishing season can last until October*.

*Fishing periods vary depending on the river.

HOW TO FISH FOR ATLANTIC SALMON?

On most Quebec rivers, you are only allowed to fly fish for salmon. You can only use one fly with a single or double hook at the end of your fly line.

Outside of the regular salmon fishing period, e.g. during the sea trout fishing period, you may use up to two artificial flies with a total of three hooks at most.

TO FISH, I NEED...

  • Basic proper fishing gear.
  • A provincial fishing licence (three different kinds).

  • A daily right of access to the river.

WHY DO I NEED A RIGHT OF ACCESS?

A right of access, or a fishing pass, gives you permission to fish in designated areas. There are two types of sectors on salmon rivers:

  • Sectors with unlimited access (public sectors), i.e. with no daily limit on the number of anglers;
  • Sectors with limited access, where the number of anglers is limited on a daily basis. The right to fish in these types of sectors is allocated through a draw.

MAY I KEEP WHAT I CATCH?

There are limits pertaining to the number of fish you are allowed to catch, keep, and release:

  • in terms of size (e.g. salmon measuring less than 30 cm may not be harvested)
  • the number of fish caught per day and per year:
    • per angler
    • depending on the river

Furthermore, catch-and-release of salmon may be mandatory during certain periods and/or on certain rivers.

LE BUDGET

Here is an estimated budget for salmon fishing. However, keep in mind that the prices for all rights of access on any river are set by the corporation managing the river, so prices may vary.
