AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM ON THE LIFE OF ATLANTIC SALMON

The Histoire de saumon program is designed for elementary and high school students. It allows for learning through research and discovery.

The program is based on the rearing of juvenile salmon from the fertilized egg stage until the fry are stocked in the river. Incubators are installed in classrooms and then receive fertilized salmon eggs from the Station piscicole of the Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs (MFFP) in Tadoussac and from the Société Saumon de la rivière Romaine (SSRR) in Havre-Saint-Pierre. The students can then witness the hatching of the eggs and the development of the fry until it is time to release them into the river.

OBJECTIVE

This program allows students to become aware of the issues surrounding Atlantic salmon and its rivers, but also of the environment and the impact we have on our surroundings in general. They learn about the king of rivers through French, mathematics, biology and ecology lessons, as the teaching material aims to integrate various notions from different school subjects.
